The issue as it turned out to be, is that the keys supplied with the new machines, got "stolen" en route to Dell - so someone made copies of the keys and so Microsoft showed these keys as being in use by some random 12 character code - example In my case it was very specific - needed a Dell ordered between certain dates with Microsoft Office. I had the same problem described by the others when I tried activating and downloading the Office Home & Student 2016 software (retail purchase) from the MS Office web site. 5 machines and different browsers and different activation methods resulting in the same response, seems to indicate a problem at Microsoft's as all these basic suggestions have been tried. Please refrain from suggesting clearing the cache, cookies etc. I have switched machines to a 4th and 5th machine, gone to the above site and still no success, and even used different locations - I took the machines home to try from there, used a hot spot for internet access and still no success. I have tried activating using the key at:Īnd that too doesn't help. I have used different browsers - Firefox, Chrome and off course IE 11, and get the same message. I am trying to activate these and after all Windows updates installed, am unable to activate - all three give the same "We're sorry for the wait.
